Moving to the MuSic

I remember the physical therapy students telling me that we were going to dance at my next visit, but I couldn’t imagine what that would look like.

Let’s be honest. I haven’t stood in more than 16 years, which means Dan never has known me to stand or walk on my own.

How the heck was I going to dance?

Guess I should have had more faith in Piotr and Lyndsay – the two Doctor of Physical Therapy students at Central Michigan University – and their professor Dr. Haines who led my workout sessions for the CMU PT CONECT program.

There, on December 4 in the first floor PT lab, I WAS DANCING!

And with this video, I can share with you what this once-unimaginable feat looks like:

My awesome team of therapists got me up and standing with the help of their new piece of equipment called an X-Y Gantry.

When they broke out a pair of motivational tunes – Pompeii by Bastille and my personal MS mantra I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty – I couldn’t stop smiling as I moved my arms and twisted my body.

I never once thought of my wheelchair. It was just me. With my PT partners. Dancing.

So liberating. So free.

Sure, I wish Dan could have been there to see all of this and be my dance partner, but he was back home working. Bless my caregiver Marcus for capturing the video so that Dan and others could enjoy these moments.

I no longer can stand on my own, but this doesn’t mean I have stopped moving. I can’t and won’t stop.

An interesting point is that just a week ago, Teva Life Effects posted Dan’s article Why We Keep Moving with MS. In this piece, he stresses why it’s important for people living with Multiple Sclerosis to stay in motion and offers tips for how they can make this happen whatever their ability level.

At one point he states, “See where you are and what’s possible for you.”

I’d like to add to his encouraging words and empower people to also keep their minds open and look beyond things that may seem impossible.

You know, like dancing to Tom Petty after not being able to stand for more than a decade.

Keep moving, and don’t back down. 🙂

MS and camping at Coldwater in incredibly cold weather

The same thought crossed both of our minds shortly after midnight as we huddled together shivering under five blankets. “We won’t die from hypothermia if it only gets down to 34 degrees, will we?” Jennifer reassured herself that we had keys to the van, and we could just go home where it was warm, while…Continue Reading

Virginia is for … conquering MS fears

It seems like we just got back from our epic trip to Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia to present at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Brian Mason Weekend Escape. Guess when you successfully tackle one of your biggest flying fears, the adrenaline rush takes its time leaving your system. Sure, we’ve taken direct flights countless…Continue Reading

Boat breaks down barriers for wheelchairs on the water

We learned this past weekend that wheelchairs indeed can float on water. And with this, Jennifer hooked us all with her knack for fishing. For real. Thanks to the determination of our dear friend Pete, we experienced the ultimate in accessible adventures courtesy of Barrier-Free Boating. In his quest to find a place where Jennifer…Continue Reading

ADA family restrooms? Be like Detroit Metro Airport

Dan and I thought we had it made in Nashville. Flying home from our recent trip, there was a family restroom at the Nashville International Airport. And it even was marked as being handicapped accessible. We quickly learned that not all family restrooms are created equal. I mean, we appreciated the efforts of the Nashville…Continue Reading

Speaking of Dan’s workplace accommodation

It wasn’t supposed to come to this: Me, asking for a workplace accommodation because of my Multiple Sclerosis. I was invincible for more than 17 years as the assistant director of publications at Central Michigan University. I even had an office on the second floor and never once flinched at repeatedly climbing two flights of…Continue Reading

Whether to go, weather we’ll stay

My initial thought when the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch was that it was much ado about nothing. The posted watch predicted everything shy of hellfire and brimstone the very day Jennifer and I were set to traverse three hours to Ford Field in Detroit and watch our beloved CMU Chippewas battle…Continue Reading

Maintaining a social life and ADA accommodations

We felt bad and apologized when we asked other people to take care of things we have do each time we attend a public event. Welcome, friends. Our life can be such an inconvenience. Not that the people patiently handling our requests weren’t fully willing to help us. We just regretted having to ask them…Continue Reading
