Boat breaks down barriers for wheelchairs on the water

We learned this past weekend that wheelchairs indeed can float on water.

And with this, Jennifer hooked us all with her knack for fishing.

For real.

Thanks to the determination of our dear friend Pete, we experienced the ultimate in accessible adventures courtesy of Barrier-Free Boating.

In his quest to find a place where Jennifer could experience fishing on a boat (despite her wheelchair), Pete found this incredible organization while watching an episode of Destination Michigan. Barrier-Free Boating operates a 22-foot custom-made accessible pontoon boat that gives people with disabilities the opportunity to experience boating and fishing on Otter Lake.

We truly can’t say enough about what this day was like for us, so we’ll let our Facebook Live post as well as the photos from the trip do the talking. And Jennifer was sure to write all about it in the “Accomplishments that made me feel good today” section of her personal journal in the Health Storylines app

Her major accomplishment? Being the first in our group of seven friends to catch a fish 🙂

Our friend Pete introduced us to this accessible treasure in the eastern Michigan village of Otter Lake.

A ramp between the boat and the dock enabled Jennifer to venture out onto Otter Lake. Here she gets some help from Al Sorge, the captain of our boat ride and the fonder of Barrier-Free Boating.

Within 15 minutes of our three-hour boat ride, Jennifer was the first of our group to catch a fish. #SoProud

Dan wasn’t far behind Jennifer when he reeled in this beauty.

Thanks to our friends Pete and his wife, Deb, for making this epic day possible!
