Help 'Challenge MS'

Less than two weeks ago, we learned about a group of local people preparing to undertake the unthinkable to fight Multiple Sclerosis. They are going to ride their bikes from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, in an ambitious endeavor to raise awareness and $20,000 to help fight MS. We, along with our friend and local MS self-help group leader Cathy, were invited to attend a recent Challenge MS fundraising event, and we couldn’t be more touched and excited by their efforts. It is our pleasure to feature this guest post by Melissa Kane – one of the team members – and we encourage you to do what you can to support their selfless ride to Challenge MS.  – Dan and Jennifer

Over the last 90 days, all eight members of our Challenge MS team have been riding roughly 100 miles a week each, attempting to train for what will undoubtedly be one of the most physically demanding weeks of our life!

Right now we are days away from our 1,200-mile bicycling adventure and the Challenge MS team is getting very excited and trying to prepare.

We’ve stocked up on protein shakes/bars, fruit, and fluids, and we’re in the process of packing up our RV and trailer (which we’ve recently built a large bicycle rack for!).

None of us have ever done a bicycle trip EVEN CLOSE to this magnitude before, so we have to keep reminding ourselves that safety is our number one priority! We’ve purchased large orange safety flags and blinking lights for our bikes and agreed that florescent clothing and helmets are a must. We have half a dozen replacement tire tubes to repair flats, and whatever tools we believe we’ll need. We’ve all made sure we have appropriate clothing for all types of temperatures and weather conditions, including SNOW and RAIN!

And now? We think we’re READY TO DO THIS!

We are ALL amateur cyclists, so this weeklong journey will prove to be a huge challenge for all of us – but we’re doing it for Multiple Sclerosis, and for the people that have to live everyday with the disabling disease. THEY are our motivation, and whom which we draw our strength. Please say a little prayer for us and wish us a safe journey home.
– Melissa Kane
