With the posting of my Anthropology 590 grade today (a B+ and I’m okay with that), I have reached the halfway point in my Humanities graduate program at Central Michigan University.
Being in the middle, I am reflecting back on some of the things I have learned thus far in my various English, History, Film, or Anthropology classes. And because I love lists, here is my compiled Top Ten Lessons from Graduate School.
10. Bathrooms, no matter where they are, are a major theme, setting, or archetype in my life. Guess that makes the toilet a motif. At least I think that’s correct. Agree? And, NEVER should any part of me be on its floor, especially my face.
9. A written in-class essay exam may sound easy enough, but after living with MS for the past 13 years, will prove otherwise.
8. Some things may change, but procrastination rules eternal.
7. This education is excellent and the people – my professors, classmates, and campus employees – are excellent plus one!
6. I do not deal with stress well. That is worth repeating: I DO NOT DEAL WITH STRESS WELL.
5. John Hughes was brilliant, and The Breakfast Club will always be his finest work, in my humble opinion.
4. I am so lucky to be a woman living in the United States in 2010, not a woman in the American past, or a woman working in the maquiladoras of Mexico or global sex trade of Asia, Europe, the U.S., or some former Soviet republic.
3. Graduate school is tough, but nothing worth having is easy to get.
2. Freshman 15? What explains my weight gain? Hmm, #5 perhaps 🙂
1. A CMU ALUMNI sweatshirt is such an incredible motivation tool.
And to quote Michael & Tony, “That’s it. That’s the list.”
Pretty interesting graduate program, don’t you think?
Here’s looking forward to my health allowing me to complete the other half of my program, because a master’s degree will be such an achievement and that shirt will be SO cute!!
P.S. Sorry, I went a little link happy, but I hope you enjoyed them.
Congratulations and best wishes for the second half.
I love the list! Congratulations on the grade in ANT; I somehow managed the same one. What a blessing.
Getting to sit next to you every week taught me a lot about embracing life and the opportunities it presents us. I am so glad we got to spend time together, even if it was just a few hours a week. I’d love to stay in touch with you!
Have a great break!
Sarah
